“Sounds describe themselves.”
“Sounds have more than one character.”
“I never actually tried to talk about sound.”
How do people think, talk about, and visualise sound? I am developing a method of sound (and music) visualisation that attempts to get rid of the visual cliches around instrumental electronic music. I developed an experiment that would help me to get a better inside into the way visual artists, audiovisual artists and musicians think about sound, what language they use to describe them and what visual associations they have with sounds and why. My findings I then used to develop the basis of a sound visualisation methodology and an attempt to categorise and explain the visualisations people have with sounds based on physical and acoustic sound characteristics. I visualised a selection of responses that capture the extent of the visualisation range of sound and combined them in an audio-visual virtual installation.
